Who We Are
The Animal Welfare Division is responsible for public safety and animal care and protection. We partner with rescue groups, foster homes, volunteers and no-kill shelters to minimize unnecessary euthanasia and to promote the humane ethic. We are building a city in which pet ownership is a pleasure to the owners without becoming a burden to the community; in which owners, non-owners and animals alike are treated with respect; and in which animals are treated with kindness and compassion. Our goal is to be "no kill" for placeable animals by 2010.
Adopting a friend
We have a stated goal of being no-kill for placeable animals by 2010. Placeable is defined as dogs and cats 8 weeks and older who are healthy and of sound temperament. Our no-kill campaign is called "Project Animal Life (P.A.L.)" and is Oklahoma City’s campaign to end the euthanasia of adoptable shelter pets by 2010. It is a campaign created by the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division and the Citizens’ Action Committee, a group of dedicated activists who are working in our community to advance the Division’s goals. We are already no-kill for pocket pets, livestock, herptiles, birds, rabbits and some breeds of dogs.
All adoptable animals are sterilized prior to placement in permanent homes, and we practice early-age spay/neuter (8 weeks and 2 pounds body weight). We test dogs for heartworm, ehrlichea, and lyme disease and provide heartworm treatment for adoption dogs.
We test cats for FeLV/FIV. Additionally, for animals going into the adoption program, we provide worming, treatment for fleas and ticks, vaccination against rabies, either FVRCP(cats) or DHLPP(dogs), and medical care as needed.
Our adoption fee for dogs and cats is $25 during Dec 2008/Jan, 2009, to celebrate 'Home For The Holidays'. *The adoption fee is usually $50, except for multiple adoptions at the same time and special needs animals. Those fees are $25 for each animal. Special needs animals include, but are not limited to, animals in adoption 14 or more days, pets 4 years of age and older, and animals needing certain medical care.
